Call Impulse for self-organising logistics re-opened: proposals can be submitted until 14 November 2017
How can a logistics system be prepared for the Physical Internet? This question takes centre stage in the call Impulse for self-organising logistics. Consortia of researchers and private and/or public partners can apply for funding for a project for applied, independent research. A total budget of 475,000 euros has been made available.

Pilot Industrial Doctorates to facilitate doing a PhD in industry
 
NWO and the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science have launched a pilot with the Industrial Doctorates programme to facilitate collaboration between knowledge institutions and industry, and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in particular. Within the programme, a PhD student carries out his or her research at both the knowledge institution and the participating company.The deadline for submitting applications is 16 January 2018.

Modern Science: 17th-century roots unearthed
 
On Monday 30 October, the University of Groningen launched a free online course that will investigate the sources of modern science. Three researchers from the Talent Scheme (Veni) are the driving force behind this MOOC (massive online open course): Andrea Sangiacomo, Han Thomas Adriaenssen and Doina-Cristina Rusu.

Dutch raised bogs under pressure
 
Roy van Beek, fascinated by 'dangerous and mysterious places, far from the inhabited world', studies the dynamic relationship between man and landscape in the prehistoric and early historic period. Raised bogs have been part of the Dutch cultural landscape for many thousands of years. Throughout that time, they have been explored, settled and exploited by humans. Van Beek has been working on his Vidi project Home Turf, supported by NWO funding under the Talent Scheme.

New context, but underlying philosophy has long history
 
Lotte Jensen, recently professor at Radboud University, received in addition to an Aspasia grant, a Vidi grant and a Vici grant from NWO's Talent Scheme programme. She is currently carrying out research into Dutch cultural history (1600-1900), with specific focus on national identity formation and nationalism.

How the Frisians became international mariners…
 
Frisian mariners' communities were important merchant shippers within Dutch trade between 1650 and 1770. However, how this arose had not been clear up until now. The recently promoted Simone Steenbeek investigated the characteristics of the places where the mariners lived and the navigation routes that they followed. Her research was funded by a grant from NWO's Free Competition (humanities) programme.
